What is the definition of suspense? The state or quality of being undecided, uncertain or doubtful? Shawn Arranha truly defines the term in his debut film Hide & Seek. To make a film on this genre, it takes some skills and efforts to unfold scenes which not only look unpredictable but also manage to scare you and Hide & Seek is a good biscuit to bite.
So what do we have here? The tagline of the film says ‘friendship will never be the same again’. Six friends, when they were kids, celebrate Christmas party under the watchful eyes of their parents. But weirdly, one of them takes drugs, another one finds a pistol kept in a drawer, a boy and girl spend some quality time in the bathroom and the elders do not even have the slightest idea of the mischief which takes place inside.
All of them move on and become successful people and lead a normal life except Om (Purab Kohli), who has spent 12 years in hospital after that very Christmas night. What happened that night? You are not getting it here. But will tell you some bits of it.
Om loves her childhood sweetheart Jyothika but his mother doesn’t want him to keep any contact with her. However, Jyothika didn’t come to meet him even once in all these years that Om spent in the hospital. However, Om has no complains.
The four other friends too never come to meet Om in the hospital including his elder brother (Samir) Abhimanya. One fine day, they all meet again. Not that they were destined to meet but the destiny was being written by someone else. Who is it? It was Christmas night again.
The film might remind you of I Know What You Did Last Summer and its Hindi version Kuch to Hai not because of the story line but because of the killer’s weird getup.
There is no doubt that this small budget film does keep you on the edge of the seat till the climax when unfortunately the story starts losing its grip.
Arjan Bajwa is made to say some real funny dialogues like Bahar se sahi personality and andar se municipality. Samir (previously seen in Jannat) manages to add weight to his short role. Purab Kohli does a good job of a psycho.
VERDICT: It is worth a watch for the excellent storytelling only if you ignore the climax. The film certainly has its moments of chills and thrills.
RATING:3.5/5
